Resources
Websites:
GeoffSchackelford.com - One of the best minds on the future of golf. An accomplished writer and one of the best blogs/story aggregators in the game. Greatly indebted to the service he has provided for a long time.
GolfClubAtlas.com - Well-known repository of the game’s great courses the world over. Ran Morrissett, Ben Cowan-Dewar, Joe Andriole, and their contributors offered thoughtful writing and analysis far before anyone else. And it’s still the best resource for reading about courses.
TheFriedEgg.com - The new guard. Great email newsletter a few times a week to stay current on the game without stuffy reporting. They set themselves apart with thoughtful golf course architecture pieces. Great podcast. Andy Johnson and Garret Morrison are acing it.
NoLayingUp.com - These guys get, and communicate, “normal golf” better than anyone. Normal Golf = golf played by 99.9% of golfers. They take the stress off the PGA Tour obsessed approach to absorbing the game. In particular, I’m a fan of their Tourist Sauce YouTube Series, great travel, great fun, and a tremendous respect for the lineage of the game.
TheGolfersJournal.com - Excellent storytelling in a primarily print format. Collector’s items for their high quality writing, stunning imagery, and fantastic publishing. The Golfers Journal and Broken Tee Society are on to something very special, can’t wait to see the impact they continue to have on shaping the game.
CookieJarGolf.com - Definitively new golf media, with great taste and an appreciation for tradition. Born out of the pandemic, the trip who run Cookie Jar Golf celebrate the great old clubs/courses through their “Story of a golf club” video series but also highlight off-the-beaten-track courses. Great resources to learn more about U.K. golf.
Books that have influenced how we think about golf:
The Spirit of St. Andrews (by: Alister MacKenzie) - We are so privileged that a giant of the game left such insightful writings. Thank goodness that this was eventually published, albeit posthumously.
The Future of Golf (by: Geoff Schackelford) - He’s been tooting the horn for a ball that flies reasonable distances, more consistently and thoughtfully than anyone in the modern era.
Golf In The Kingdom (by: Michael Murphy) - This book will continue to grow in stature as the decades go on. Not only does artfully explore so many of the elusive qualities of the game, but it reads like a world-class novel. Truly a great one.
Extraordinary Golf: The Art of The Possible (by: Fred Shoemaker) - “The culture of golfers, the endless quest for getting better so we can enjoy golf more?” Fred’s approach to learning how to relate to the game is all about learning your own reasons for playing, and enjoying, the game. Hint: it’s about way more than getting better.
